Behind the Person
Tell a little bit about yourself and what you do.
I am Joslyn, founder of The Fancy Brand. Free, curious, and creative are three words that best describe me. I am all about using your passion to fuel your purpose.
What is one quote you live by? Give an example of how you’ve applied this quote in your journey.
I love this quote because it requires action. I know everyone mentions the law of attraction but I believe in the Law of Action! I am constantly putting myself in the position to enact change.
For example, with all the police brutality happening in society especially toward the African American community I decided to take action. I participated in the Miss Phi Beta Sigma Pageant and ran on the platform of love and unity. And I actually, won first place. Whoo!
So for TheFancyBrand, the change we actively strive to bring is more love, more self-empowerment, more global unity... through the act of giving.
What’s one habit you have developed that you feel as though has aided in your overall journey?
I've noticed when we plan for the future we often try to avoid making mistakes.Yet mistakes are lessons that teach us and aid in overall journey. I have learned things do not always go as planned, and that's okay. Be flexible.
What is one book, you feel has contributed to your success?
This book gave me clarity on the concept of understanding the ego. I highly recommend.
All things Business
How did TheFancyBrand come to form? What was the idea that started it all?
I started around the age of thirteen doing myspace layouts and teaching myself HTML and Photoshop. After developing my skill, I realized it was my passion and began working with multiple brands. Originally, I dominated the digital space. As I continued along my journey, I realized providing a logo or building a website for clients was not enough fulfillment for me.
I soon made the transition toward branding physical products. I've always loved giving gifts growing up and making them personalized and special. So, one day it just clicked! Combining both passions of design and giving is what created The Fancy Brand.
What does TheFancyBrand do?
The mission of TheFancyBrand is to simply inspire the art of giving. We provide custom gifts and favors for special occasions. We also provide modern stationery design and home decor. Additionally, we cater to groups and small businesses with branded promotional items.
There are a lot of misconceptions about running a small business or being an entrepreneur, like lack of freedom or difficulty growing income. What’s the biggest myth you’ve learned to be untrue?
This could not be further from the truth. I was one to think as long as I had a website and provided quality work I could be an entrepreneur. I had no idea the dedication, back office work, customer service, etc. All these different factors necessary to building a successful small business.
What tools or systems is a necessity for running your business smoothly?
- Digital: Trello, Mindmap, and Adobe Creative Suites
- Physical: Notebooks and To- do lists.
In order for a business to thrive there must be clientele. What marketing strategies have you used to attract and find new leads for business growth?
- Word of Mouth via creating genuine and authentic relationships.
- Social Media. However, acquiring subscribers organically. Illusion or huge follower numbers do not convert into sales. Organic subscribers is the goal.
Customer Service or the customer’s overall experience is crucial when it comes to brand longevity. What experiences have you created for your clientele or audience?
At TheFancyBrand we are constantly reinventing ourselves. We want to make sure the products we offer are creative, new, setting the trend. For example, we may release a new way for certain products. We want our consumers to be excited when browsing our site and check back for new colors and products being added.
What are some of your biggest frustrations or pain points of your current journey?
I am learning my business' purpose is bigger than me. I have to realize the work is never done. My business is growing and evolving. Like I mentioned before, I must be flexible in not solely my journey, but my business' journey as well.
Influencing the Future
What are some accomplishments of TheFancyBrand? And where do you see its future?
I am proud to be able to offer internationally shipping. I love knowing my brand is impacting the world. I recently had a graduation cap designed by TheFancyBrand featured in an article from a client on the west coast. It is such an amazing feeling to have your work be recognized.
In the future, I see TheFancyBrand being broadcasted to the masses. I want us to make an impact.
I describe a Mindshift as a moment in time, where one realizes, there is more to life than what society has told. Can you describe your Mindshift moment?
My Mindshift moment occurred when I discovered my purpose.
What advice can you give to other entrepreneurs?
Lastly, think about what living life on your own terms means to you. Describe your ideal situation.
I know, when I stop asking people questions expecting them to give me the answer I am looking for then I am truly living life on my own terms.
